SAMAKI Project – State University of Zanzibar (SUZA)

The SAMAKI project at the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) invites applications from two (2) qualified and motivated individuals to join the project team. The selected candidates will actively support the implementation of SAMAKI project activities in close collaboration with the project coordinator and other project partners.

About the Project

The SAMAKI project focuses on strengthening research, education, and community engagement related to fisheries, nutrition, livelihoods, gender, and governance. The project aims to support sustainable fisheries development and capacity building within higher education and coastal communities.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidates will:

  • Support the planning, budget and coordination of SAMAKI project activities.
  • Assist in organizing fieldwork, meetings, workshops, and training sessions.
  • Participate in data collection, management, analysis, and documentation of project activities.
  • Actively contribute and engage to scientific writing and preparation of research publications using existing SAMAKI project datasets, including drafting manuscripts, reports, and policy briefs.
  • Lead or co-author of at least one scientific manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal during the engagement period, based on available project datasets.
  • Support the dissemination of research findings through reports, community meetings and publications.
  • Assist in reporting of project reports, outputs and activities.
  • Perform other project-related tasks as assigned by the project coordinator.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Hold at least a Masters degree in a relevant field such as Marine Sciences, Fisheries, Environmental Science/chemistry, Natural Resource Management, Development Studies, Economics, or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in fisheries, coastal livelihoods, marine resource management, or community development.
  • Experience in research activities, data analysis, and scientific writing.
  • Demonstrated ability or strong interest in developing academic manuscripts and technical reports.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Proficiency in English and Swahili (both written and spoken).
  • Basic skills in computer applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data management/analysis tools.
