The School of Computing, Communication and Media Studies (SCCM) was established in 2016 following the upgrading of the department of Computer Science and IT formerly part of the School of Natural and Social Sciences (SNSS).

The School of Computing, Communication and Media Studies (SCCMS) was established following the merging of the Zanzibar Journalism and Mass Media College (ZJMMC) with the State University of Zanzibar. All teaching, research and consultancies related to computing and media studies are under this School. Its mission is to be a premier centre of training and innovation in the fields of computing, communication, media and applied informatics that will attract students from across Eastern Africa. The school intends to stick on specialised skills and areas of teaching and research, the identified ones being specialised skills and areas of teaching and research, the identified ones being:

Prof. Abubakar Diwani Bakari
Prof. Abubakar is an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the Department of Computer Science and IT, School of Computing, Communication and Media Studies is an accomplished ICT scholar with a PhD in Computer Science from the Universiti Putra Malaysia, an MSc in Computer Science and a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Dar es Salaam. He also serves as an Adjunct Research Scientist at the African Institute for Capacity Development and is a Board Member and Coordinator of the Africa Center of Excellence in Internet of Things.
