Hargeisa, Somaliland – The University of Hargeisa, in collaboration with the Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC), successfully hosted the BSU IV Annual Meeting in Hargeisa on June 3rd, 2025. This three-day workshop brought together participants from Gulu University (Uganda), the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), and the University of Hargeisa, alongside Danish universities, to strengthen research capacity, promote South-South-North collaboration, and address development challenges through academia.

The workshop was officially opened by the President of Hargeisa University, who emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among Southern Universities and with their Northern partners. The Danish Ambassador also attended and participated in the workshop sessions.

Key areas of collaboration discussed included: joint research initiatives, joint PhD supervision, online and blended learning methodologies, grant management, laboratory analysis and experimentation, and innovative learning pedagogy.

The SUZA BSU4 team actively participated in the Annual Meeting, including Prof. Hamad Issa (BSU4 Coordinator), Ms. Mwashamba Suraka (Administrator), Dr. Fatma Saleh (WP1 leader), Dr. Idrissa Hamad (WP2 leader), Ms. Aziza Siba (WP3 leader), Dr. Abdalla Shaame (WP4 leader), and Ms. Biubwa Ally (WP1 member).

Ms. Aziza Siba presented SUZA’s experience in innovative pedagogy, highlighting their use of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and case challenges as teaching approaches. Dr. Idrissa Hamad facilitated a case clinic titled “Meeting Deadline,” an experiential learning method that allowed participants to reflect on their practices within BSU activities and daily routines.
Gender issues were also a significant topic, with Ms. Biubwa Ally presenting on “Women in Research.” She showcased SUZA’s achievements in promoting gender equality, including the establishment of a Gender Desk and related policies.

Beyond the academic sessions, the annual meeting also incorporated cultural and entertainment activities. Participants enjoyed experiencing Hargeisa culture and traditional dancing during the opening dinner. The opening dinner for all participants was held at the Ambassador Hotel in Hargeisa city on the first day.
