BSU4 Work Packages

WP1 – Environmental Public Health (EPH)

WP1 aims to strengthen research and postgraduate education in Environmental Public Health by addressing health challenges that affect communities across Zanzibar. Through intervention-based research and collaboration with public institutions, the work package generates evidence that supports better health policies, improved environmental management, and sustainable public health practices. It also builds research capacity through postgraduate training, mentorship, and international collaboration.

WP2 – Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Health and Services (MaCES)

WP2 focuses on protecting and sustainably managing Zanzibar’s marine and coastal ecosystems. The work package conducts collaborative research to improve understanding of marine biodiversity, ecosystem health, and the services these ecosystems provide to communities. By engaging researchers, policymakers, and local stakeholders, WP2 develops practical solutions that support environmental conservation, climate resilience, and the sustainable blue economy.

WP3 – Postgraduate Education and Research Capacity

WP3 is dedicated to developing the next generation of researchers and academic leaders. It strengthens postgraduate programmes by improving research supervision, enhancing doctoral and master’s training, promoting research-based teaching, and expanding opportunities for international collaboration and academic exchange. The work package aims to create a vibrant research culture that supports innovation and academic excellence.

WP4 – Institutional Capacity Development

WP4 strengthens the institutional systems that enable high-quality research, education, and innovation. It focuses on improving research management, grant administration, digital learning infrastructure, university-wide services, quality assurance, and strategic partnerships. Through capacity building and organisational development, WP4 ensures that SUZA has the systems, skills, and resources needed to sustain research excellence and deliver long-term impact.
