Prof. Abubakar is an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the Department of Computer Science and IT, School of Computing, Communication and Media Studies is an accomplished ICT scholar with a PhD in Computer Science from the Universiti Putra Malaysia, an MSc in Computer Science and a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Dar es Salaam. He also serves as an Adjunct Research Scientist at the African Institute for Capacity Development and is a Board Member and Coordinator of the Africa Center of Excellence in Internet of Things. Prof. Bakari is the Founder of the WasteX Lab innovation programme and plays a leading role in advancing digital transformation at the State University of Zanzibar and beyond, where he heads the university’s Software Development Team. He has an extensive publication record in reputable peer-reviewed journals and has led and contributed to numerous high-impact research and development initiatives. These include projects on digital research systems, blue carbon and climate monitoring frameworks, innovation ecosystem strengthening and capacity-building programs for public servants and students. His portfolio also includes leadership roles in major national and international initiatives such as the Resilience Academy, GeoICT, and the Bahari Maisha project.
