The School of Natural and Social Sciences (SNSS) aims to produce professional Arts, Natural and Social Sciences graduates, Chemists and Environmentalists graduates.

The School’s goal is to support students’ learning of the scientific approach to knowledge acquisition for the attainment of scientific based knowledge.

Our Mission

Creation of a centre of excellence to cater for the needs of people of Zanzibar in particular and Tanzania in general as well as to help the development of East African region.

Our Main Goals

Provision of access to lifelong learning opportunity to wide audience including general public, professionals, business community and residents of Zanzibar, Tanzania, and other regions.

Our Principle

  • Every individual has the ability to learn at a place that is suitable to him or her.
  • Every community member has the right of access to education and training.
  • Education and training are life-long and one can learn at any time of his or her life.
  • Education is a tool that is required by all individuals to enable them to fulfill their social and economic responsibilities.

Our Main Strategies

Running courses which are demand driven, more practical to the intended audience and are oriented to problem solving.
  • Targeting adult segment of the community and needy clients.
  • The use of both traditional and modern training methods and techniques including personal contacts, multimedia and cyber network.
  • Conducting programmes at appropriate and convenient times to trainees mostly in the afternoon’s evenings.
  • Allowing payment by instalments while attending the courses. 

Dr. Abdallah Rashid Mkumbukwa

Dean of SNSS

Dr. Abdallah Rashid Mkumbukwa is a lecturer in History and Dean of School of Natural and Social Sciences at the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA). He has experience in academic management as he is a former Head of Department of Arts and Member of Senate of SUZA in 2009. Also, he was a Coordinator of History and Archaeology programmes at SUZA. Dr. Mkumbukwa is also currently serving as a Member of SUZA Senate and General Secretary of the Historical Association of Tanzania (HAT).

Dr Mkumbukwa is recipient of a German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) scholarship and the Norwegian Council for Higher Education’s Programme for Development, Research and Education (NUFU) Scholarship. He has experience in teaching and research in areas of natural and social sciences on historical perspectives. He has written a book and published on history of spread and control of malaria in Zanzibar, Wildlife conservation policies in Tanzania and history of use and conservation of marine resources in Zanzibar as well as social development issues.
