Zanzibar, May 4, 2026 \u2013 The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) hosted delegates from the University of Minnesota (UOM) and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) for a preparatory visit to discuss the launch of a Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) training program for medical and nursing students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting, held at the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Research and Consultancy, brought together senior officials and faculty members from SUZA alongside representatives from the visiting institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From SUZA, attendees included Prof. Salum Seif Salum, Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor for Planning, Finance and Administration; Dr. Salma A. Mahmoud, Dean of the School of Health and Medical Sciences; Mr. Mansab R. Mansab; and Dr. Haji Omar. MUHAS was represented by Dr. Dickson Mkoka, while the University of Minnesota delegation comprised Prof. Simon Rosser and Dr. Drissa Toure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussions centered on plans, agreements, and objectives for the upcoming training program, which will specifically target final-year Medical Doctor (MD) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) students. These groups of students, who frequently interact directly with patients in community healthcare settings, are expected to benefit significantly from the training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delegates highlighted a critical gap in current healthcare practice, noting that many providers lack confidence in addressing sexual health issues with patients. This limitation often reduces their understanding of patients\u2019 experiences and concerns. The training program aims to equip medical and nursing students with the skills and confidence needed to provide comprehensive care and improve disease management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SRH training program was first launched at MUHAS and later expanded to the University of Dodoma (UDOM) and Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College (KCMCU). The initiative is now entering its fourth phase, with SUZA identified as a key site due to its significant enrollment of Zanzibari and Muslim medical students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Including SUZA in the program is expected to provide valuable insights into how SRH training materials are received within culturally and religiously sensitive contexts.
